Mastering Operations: Control and Safety in Centrifugal Gas Compressors

In the critical infrastructure of the energy and process sectors, centrifugal gas compressors are the heartbeat of operations, ensuring the seamless movement of gas across vast pipeline networks. The operational integrity of these complex machines is paramount.  A single failure can lead to significant production losses and safety risks. On 18-20 March ESD Simulation Training will host an intensive Control and Operation of Centrifugal Gas Compressors course in Perth, which is specifically designed to equip professionals with the practical expertise needed to manage these sophisticated systems.

Performance and Selection: The Dynamics of Compression

At the core of the course is a deep dive into the fundamental principles of compression. Participants will explore the technical nuances that differentiate positive displacement (PD) from dynamic compressors, gaining insights into how these variations dictate selection for specific industrial applications.

The program focuses on the mechanics of how a centrifugal compressor generates pressure, mapping performance through the interplay of head, flow, speed, and efficiency. Through high-fidelity dynamic simulation models, delegates will investigate how fluctuating suction and discharge conditions—such as gas composition and pressure—impact overall performance. This hands-on approach allows for a risk-free exploration of both fixed and variable speed compressor behaviours.

Mitigating High-Stakes Risk: Surge and Anti-Surge Control

A primary focus of the training is surge, a violent flow reversal that can cause catastrophic mechanical damage to impellers, bearings, and seals. The program provides a technical analysis of why surge occurs and the speed at which it can compromise a system.

Participants will master the principles of anti-surge control, including:

  • Safety Margin Analysis: Designing and tuning control systems to maintain a stable operating distance from the surge line.
  • Recycle System Design: Investigating the role of recycle valves and lines in protecting the compressor during sudden trips.
  • System Layout Optimisation: Evaluating the proper placement of non-return valves and scrubbers to ensure maximum protection.

A Legacy of Simulation-Driven Learning

ESD leverages three decades of experience and a global faculty of industry veterans to deliver a program that bridges the gap between theory and the real world.  By utilising dynamic simulation, this course provides an interactive environment where engineers, operators and maintenance personnel  can develop a deeper, lasting understanding of process operations.
